The five-day training course “Meeting Cultural Education” runs daily from 09:00 – 16:30 with coffee break at 11:00 and lunch at 13:00 h. The training course is based on the following six modules:

  1. Artistic processes (how to initiate, enable and support them in the classroom and museum).
  2. Documentation formats (development of new experimental and artistic documentation formats, which mediate the findings in different artistic media).
  3. Reflection and feedback (how self-, group- and participant-reflection can be achieved, how we can reflect ourselves beyond hierarchy and using artistic methods).
  4. Contemporary trends and zeitgeist in the field of arts education and mediation / * Mittlung (how to involve contemporary professional methods and contents).
  5. Project management (how to coordinate and plan; how to deal with the differing logics of school system versus cultural system / arts system).
  6. Practical project (how to cooperate; what phases does a project have? Participants develop a concept / mock-up in multidisciplinary exchange using different artistic techniques such as creative writing, sculpture, installation, composition).

Reflecting the themes of the 10th Berlin Biennale, the modules will include a sensitivity training addressing positions, perspectives and social constellations – without focussing on “differences” or addressing “target groups”. How can new narratives – created through the dialogue with the exhibition and the art works – create a different vocabulary for a new understanding and meaning of the world and open up new perspectives?

Methodology

The modular training course pursues a subject-oriented understanding of learning. The course integrates individual motivations with action- and participant-oriented learning settings. The settings are methodologically flexible and team-oriented. The inclusion of different professions and perspectives is fundamental. The aim is to embed the professional biographies of the participants as resources in order to benefit from mutual expertise.

Each of the six modules combines the participant experimentation and experience with practice-oriented theory to provide basic instruments. The aspect of diversity provides an overarching theme in all six modules and will be dealt with from theoretical and practice based perspective. One of the desired objectives of the course to have an impact team processes and initiate personal development.

The qualification itself is structured like a project in three phases: 1. Arrival and research; 2. Experimental work and artistic transfer; 3. Presentation and documentation; The qualification incorporates the key points of a good project and represents them in its structure. The participants can also experience and analyse the stages of the project on a meta-level and take their personal findings back to their own institutes.

Objectives

The course participants

  • will gain practical knowledge about how to make artistic projects work in the school environment; support and skills for initiating, developing and realising their own projects in a multi-professional team.
  • are invited to discuss and explore the special opportunities arising from collaboration with professionals from the art and cultural fields and cooperation with cultural institutions.
  • will deepen their own experiences and knowledge in relation to artistic projects in the school environment through practical exercises.
  • will learn new methods and tools for initiating and enhancing the capability and self-efficacy of children and young adults within artistic processes.
  • will analyze personality-strengthening factors, develop new criteria and work out new procedures for providing feedback to promote skills and key competences of children and adolescents outside the grading systems.

After completing the course, the participants will be able to

  • analyze and define the concepts of cultural education, outreach work and artistic projects.
  • establish a network with experts in art and cultural fields for initiating and realizing an artistic project with school staff.
  • create an awareness for artistic processes and projects on a regional, national and European / international level within the educational environment.
  • evaluate efficacy, reflect on themselves, analyze their own attitude, create space for alternative forms of knowledge transfer and generate new criteria for quality.

Course background

The five-day training course “Meeting cultural education! Hands-on training, research and new narratives” has been developed by experts from Austria, Switzerland, Germany. It based on the results and products of the Erasmus + funded European project “School Inclusive Cultural Education” (Website only in German). The 10th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art provides the framework for improving the quality and impact of qualification methods for teachers, artists and cultural professionals, adult educators and mediators in the field of contemporary art and art education in schools and cultural institutions.
